We’re delighted that you are here! Our goal is to support newcomer children to have the opportunity to explore their creativity and love of music.
Before you apply for Keys for Newcomers, please ensure you meet the eligibility criteria listed below. You will need to have your personal information, as well as your child’s personal information ready.

Funding is available for students who meet the following criteria:
- Children aged 5 to 18;
- Newcomers (immigrant, refugee, or evacuee status) who have been in Canada for less than three years; and
- Have a family household income that meets the Statistics Canada Low Income Cut-Off.*
- Funding is available for maximum 2 children per family.
*Alternate arrangements (such as partially subsidized or discounted lessons) may be offered, on a case by case basis, for families whose household income is above the cut-off listed above. Please submit your application even if your household income does not match the criteria.

Applications for Keys for Newcomers students are now open and will be reviewed on a first-come, first-served basis. You will be notified of the results within one month of submitting your application.
Please be aware that we currently have limited grants available.
If you are accepted into the program, you will have five days to accept the grant, beginning on the date the acceptance email is sent. If you do not respond within five days, your spot will be forfeited and given to the next applicant.
If you are not selected to receive a grant at this time, and meet eligibility requirements, your application will be kept on file for when more grants become available.

Funding Details
The Keys for Newcomers grant covers the cost of piano lessons and music books. In addition, if you a require an electronic keyboard, one can be provided to you on loan for the duration of your participation into the program.
Funding is provided for two sessions a year, approximately 18 lessons per session:
- Fall / Winter session—1 September to 31 January
- Spring / Summer—1 February to 30 June
Once approved, your lessons for the first session will be covered. Enrollment in all subsequent sessions will be based on your teacher’s recommendation.
Along with your confirmation email, you will receive a list of same language teachers who are associated with Keys for Newcomers. Please reach out to them directly to book your lessons.
Lessons will be provided at our partner locations: CCIS (1111 11 Ave SW) and MRU Conservatory (4825 Richard Rd SW).
Payment for lessons will be made directly to teachers.
