The Honens Honours Concert is made possible through the partnership of the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra and the generosity of Jenny Belzberg and David Lyons/Sir Jack Lyons Charitable Trust.
The Sir Jack Lyons Charitable Trust has been empowering and supporting the arts since 1963. Based in Leeds, England, the Trust supports a broad spectrum of artistic practice that spans countries, genres, education and performance: from concert halls in the UK to filmmaking in Israel to orchestral and chamber music in Canada. One of its first initiatives was supporting the establishment of the Leeds International Piano Competition which was won by Honens’ Artistic Director, Jon Kimura Parker, in 1984. Both Honens and the CPO are fortunate to include the SJLCT and David Lyons among their most fervent champions.
Jenny Belzberg is one of Calgary’s most beloved and respected cultural icons. A staunch advocate of arts-based learning, her name has been synonymous with music and music education for many years. A noted philanthropist and community visionary, she played large roles in the establishment and ongoing sustainability of many organizations and initiatives which have remained important parts of Calgary’s rich cultural heritage. For fourteen years, Jenny Belzberg served on the boards of both the CPO and Honens, the latter of which she is a Founding Director and Past Board Chair (1998-2001). She is a Member of the Order of Canada (1997), the Alberta Order of Excellence (2000) and the recipient of an Honourary Doctorate from the University of Calgary (2002). In 2006, she was the inaugural Honens Honours recipient.
