Georgy Tchaidze First Laureate
Dynamic Russian pianist Georgy Tchaidze is First Laureate of Calgary’s Honens International Piano Competition (2009). The Ottawa Citizen wrote “commendable clarity... unusually powerful for a performance of so little ostentation.” following his October 2011 performance with conductor Pinchas Zukerman leading the National Arts Centre Orchestra in Rachmaninov’s Second Piano Concerto. In 2012 he performs recital debuts at Wigmore Hall in London, Glenn Gould Studio in Toronto, and at Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall. His Honens win allowed him to bring his artistry beyond Russia for performances throughout Europe and North America for the first time. Tchaidze has performed at The International Holland Music Sessions, Switzerland’s Verbier Festival Academy, made a ten-city German recital tour and played for the Governor General of Canada at the special invitation of The Glenn Gould Foundation. An avid chamber musician, he has toured across Canada and the United States with Clara-Jumi Kang, Gold Medalist of the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis, and tours in chamber ensemble again in 2012 with the Cecilia String Quartet, 2010 Banff International String Quartet Competition First Prizewinner. Also this season, he joins pianists Boris Berezovsky, Nelson Freire and Anne-Marie McDermott at the invitation of artistic director Jean-Efflam Bavouzet for the inaugural Lofoten International Piano Festival in Norway. Tchaidze’s debut recording of works by Schubert was released in July 2011 on the Honens label. Aside from music, he is a film buff – directors Fassbinder, German, Sokurov, and Tarkovsky are among his favourites.
