Evgeny Starodubtsev Laureate
The New York Times calls Russian pianist Evgeny Starodubtsev “an accomplished and probing artist” in a glowing review of his first recording on the Honens Label. Starodubtsev was named Laureate of Canada’s Honens International Piano Competition in 2009, and won Lithuania’s Ciurlionis Competition in 2011. After introduction to music by way of accordion at a young age, he studied piano and composition at the Moscow State Conservatory’s Central Music School before entering the Conservatory and continuing piano studies with Natalia Troull. Starodubtsev splits his time between piano performance and composing. His compositions include chamber works for varied instruments, including woodwinds, strings and harp. This performer-composer combination no doubt accounts for his sense of adventure and intelligent approach to music-making. He has an affinity for music of the 20th century and revels in revealing this repertory’s wonder and beauty.
Always open to unique projects, Starodubtsev has collaborated in a performance of Simeon ten Holts’ iconic Canto Ostinato and an arrangement of
Mike Oldfield’s Tubular Bells with three other pianists and dancers from Alberta Ballet, and joined five other Honens Laureates in a performance of Liszt’s rarely performed Hexameron for six pianos and orchestra with the Calgary Philharmonic last Fall. In 2011, he was soloist with the Orquestra Sinfónica Del Vallés in Spain, gave an eight-city recital tour of Germany, and performed Liszt’s Piano Concerto in E-flat major with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra. This season, he performs Balakirev’s Piano Concerto with the St Petersburg Capella Orchestra and makes his Berlin Konzerthaus recital debut in April. His recording on the Honens label of works by Hindemith, Schoenberg, Stravinsky and Szymanowski was released in July 2011.
