About the Artist Walter May
Although primarily known as a sculptor, Walter May’s practice has also included drawing, digital photography, installations and, on occasion, performance art. He has an extensive exhibition record with fifteen solo exhibitions, an additional ten collaborative exhibitions and over 75 invitational and group exhibitions at the regional and national level. International activities include the production and exhibition of works at Kling and Bang Gallery in Reykjavik, Iceland (2009), the Lui Haisu Arts Museum in Shanghai (2008), and Galeria Klimy in Warsaw, Poland (2005) as part of the Here and Gone project. May has undertaken artist residencies at Chateau Mathieu in Normandy, France (2009), Prairie North in Grand Prairie, Canada (2004), The Brazier’s International Artists Residency in Oxford, England (2001) and most recently the Djerassi Resident Artists Program in Woodside, USA (2010). Later this year, May will take part in the 2010 Alberta Biennial of Contempory Art.
Walter May’s work is represented in public and corporate collections including AFA, The Canada Council Art Bank, Glenbow Museum, the University of Lethbridge, the University of Regina, The Art Gallery of Alberta, The Nickle Arts Museum, Toronto-Dominion Bank Collection and several others.
Since 1982, Walter May has been a continuing permanent faculty member at the Alberta College of Art + Design (ACAD), teaching primarily in the sculpture program. Recent research projects and creative activities include contributions to ACAD’s Institute for the Creative Process / Hugh Dubberly produced concept maps on the subject of “Play” and “The Creative Process”. Walter May is a graduate of the University of Alberta and the University of Regina.
