Schumann
The German Romantic composer Robert Schumann created a number of works seemingly governed by a bipolar aesthetic, abruptly ranging from frantic impulsions to mournful moods. Other radiantly melodic Schumann works are inspired -- and seemingly tempered -- by conjugal love, fatherhood, and related domestic joys.
"While being completely different from one another, these three pieces by Schumann are among those works of music that are dearest to me," says German pianist Hinrich Alpers. "They embody all the ups and downs that human and artistic life can bring about."
