In 1991 philanthropist Esther Honens established Honens International Piano Competition with a $5-million endowment. Her dream was to create a stage in Calgary, and in Canada, for the world’s most promising pianists. The Honens Competition takes place every three years in Calgary.

Honens offers lucrative cash prizes and awards the world's most comprehensive Artistic and Career Development Program prize. For three years, it prepares Competition Laureates for the rigours and realities of professional careers in music and creates opportunities for growth and exposure.
The Seventh Honens International Piano Competition takes place from 17 to 26 October 2012.
